World premiere recording of Anton Rubinstein monumental opera 'Moses'. The recordings were made by Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra under Michail Jurowski together with Warsaw Philharmonic Choir and Artos Children’s Choir and a tremendous cast (staring Stanisław Kuflyuk (Moses), Torsten Kerl (Pharaoh, king of Egypt), Evelina Dobračeva (Asnath, Pharaon‘s daughter) and Małgorzata Walewska (Johebet, Moses’ mother)). The libretto was originally written in German and this recording maintains this language version.

Rubinstein greatly admired Mendelssohn’s oratorios and those of Handel too: you can hear both composers throughout the score, and Brahms, particularly in the choral writing…The musical inspiration sometimes flags…However, the Warsaw Philharmonic Choir are magnificent and the baritone Stanisław Kuflyuk is a tireless Moses…For all its imperfections this is an important recording

Rubinstein had certainly been listening to his German Romantic classics, as the dominant metre of the opera is the gentle throb of Mendelssohn…with a dash of Wagner…Almost unerringly, however, Mosenthal and Rubinstein seem to miss the dramatic or expressive potential of these episodes…Jurowski’s cast are all fully committed…Reiss’s buttery soprano is a shaft of light in the gloom.

The eight tableaux sound quite staid, but it’s not all religiose respectability…The underlying lack of stageworthiness does not hold back a committed cast, led by the baritone Stanisław Kuflyuk, imposing as Moses in his long recitatives…Despite the work’s longueurs, this recording (together with its downloadable libretto) is worth exploring before the parted sea closes over it again.
