These are distinctive, fully achieved works by a composer with a profoundly serious artistic purpose. They’re each worth hearing, and the Dante Quartet go at them with red-blooded gusto and an energy that’s clearly born from the thrill of discovery.

This excellent group are putting all eight Stanford string quartets on disc, and here is a second instalment of three, previously unrecorded. They are all in the minor, though the mood is reflective rather than tragic, and a glow of academic correctitude is emitted, even if there’s always room for a hop-jig.
