About
A century after his death on 25 March 1918, many harmonia mundi artists were eager to pay tribute to Claude Debussy, the magician of melody and timbre, the great ‘colourist’ and father of modern music.
The key word is ‘mélodie’ in this generous, joint song recital proposed by Sophie Karthäuser and Stéphane Degout in total symbiosis with Eugene Asti and Alain Planès.
A subtle canvas featuring the finest cycles and set in the land of the Symbolist and Impressionist poets; with Debussy the artistic journey is first and foremost a matter of colour.

[Karthäuser] excels in the lighter, earlier songs in which Debussy is developing his own style…Dégout has the ideal weight, colour and poise to explore the later, broader canvases of setting of Mallarmé, François Villon, Charles d’Orléans and Tristan l’Hermite.

Karthäuser’s dewy soprano is light and fresh and she floats lines in ‘Le tombeau des naïades’ with ease. ‘Beau soir’ is almost sung on a half-breath, Degout is a signer of pure class. He has recorded six of these songs before…since when his high baritone has darkened…Two blissful hours from four winning advocates for Debussy.
