About

In his writing for strings, Stephen Dodgson revealed an abiding love of early music through his perceptive use of ornamentation, virtuoso displays and enthusiasm for variation form. Both String Trios reflect these elements and their slow movements – hymnal in the earlier work, valedictory in the later – are especially beautiful. The Sonatina in B minor for solo violin is simultaneously a tribute to Bach and a statement of Dodgson's own musical identity, while the very different Caprice after Puck offers a complex exploration of the hobgoblin's sinister pranks.

Awards and reviews

December 2018

An absolute joy, the performances little short of ideal, perfect in intonation and ensemble, lively and delicate as required.

19th August 2018

There are four premiere recordings on this vivid production — a Sonatina in B minor for violin (Harriet Mackenzie), Caprice After Puck for viola (Sarah-Jane Bradley), Partita for cello (Graham Walker) and an early work of notable vigour, the String Trio No 1 (1951). The String Trio No 2 (1964) exhibits Dodgson’s sinewy craftsmanship, even if it can’t match the earlier gusto.

22nd July 2018

Often astringent but always interesting chamber music...the Partita for solo cello takes a venerable form and gives it a 20th-century facelift, its exuberance brilliantly handled by Graham Walker. Sarah-Jane Bradley also impresses in the complex and dark Caprice after Puck for solo viola.

October 2018

The performances and recordings are everything one could wish for: focused and lively, with no hint of studio routine or patching. Aided by minimal gaps between its nine movements, Graham Walker brings a compelling sense of line to the Cello Partita. Sarah- Jane Bradley builds up a vivid portrait variation by variation like an artist layering paint on a canvas.
