BMOP/sound presents Paul Moravec’s contemporary update to the vaunted tradition of the oratorio, here chronicling a dramatic episode in American history: the fearsome “Schoolhouse Blizzard” that hit the Great Plains in 1888. Setting poetry by US Poet Laureate Ted Kooser, who used as source material firsthand accounts of survivors, Moravec crafts a work of devastating power that brings the listener face-to-face with the terror, determination, and resilience of American settlers in the face of a natural phenomenon of catastrophic proportions. Moving and relevant, The Blizzard Voices is a valuable contribution to the choral literature of our time. Joining the musicians of the Boston Modern Orchestra Project under the direction of Gil Rose are the New England Conservatory Concert Choir and Chamber Singers along with distinguished soloists Emily Pulley and Deborah Selig, sopranos; Erica Brookhyser, mezzosoprano; Matthew DiBattista, tenor; David Kravitz, baritone, and David Cushing, bass-baritone.
