This exceptionally well-filled (almost 80 minutes) CD brings together some truly outstanding recorded performances by the great Belgian-born French conductor André Cluytens (1905-1967), who was one of the few outstanding interpreters of music of the 19th-century Germanic symphonic school. Since Cluytens's untimely death in his early 60s, his reputation has been eclipsed by younger maestros, but in this welcome new transfer, we hear the great conductor in three of Schumann's finest and most mature orchestral masterpieces, in recordings that have not been made available for several decades. Many listeners, perhaps unaware of Cluytens' mastery, will be surprised at the depth of his interpretative artistry, for these three works by Schumann - his Third and Fourth Symphonies and the Cello Concerto with André Navarra - receive performances of the greatest distinction, captured in stereo sound of vintage quality.
