The legendary partnership between Pehr Henrik Nordgren and the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra with its conductor Juha Kangas continues with this wonderful recording of Nordgren’s Concerto No. 2 for piano, strings and percussion and concerto for piano left hand only and chamber orchestra with Henri Sigfridsson and Song cycle to poems by Edith Sodergran for mezzo-soprano, strings and harp with Monica Groop. Pehr Henrik Nordgren studied in Helsinki as well as at the Tokyo University of the Arts. From 1973, he lived and worked in Kaustinen, a small place in Ostrobothnia, that is the center of folk music in Finland. It was during this time that he began his intense cooperation with the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra. His style stems from the twelve tone technique, as well as the use of tone clusters from Gyorgy Ligeti. His music also features traditional elements of Japanese folk music. The Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra has its roots in the student orchestra founded by conductor Juha Kangas at the Central Ostrobothnian Music Institute in 1972. Out of this grew, and took rot, the idea of a more permanent, professionally-led and organized orchestra. The dream of a professional orchestra of Ostrobothnia’s very own finally came true in 1989. Since then, the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra has been on numerous tours to European countries, Japan, and the United States.
