“The Essential Bruckner” includes the Seventh Symphony, the most performed symphony during Bruckner's lifetime, the complex Second Symphony and the Third Symphony, the so-called “Wagner Symphony.” All three symphonies were recorded live at the basilica in the St. Florian Monastery. General Music Director for the past fifteen years, Dennis Russell Davies, conducts all three recordings; under Davies’s lead, the orchestra cultivated and engaged with the works of its namesake on a deep, historically-informed level presenting the first/original versions of the Second and Third Symphonies.
