Much of the music here is meditative, counterbalanced by some more strenuous examples of modernism.
About
Accordionist Rafal Luc and violist Ian Anderson have a love of contemporary music which led them to name their duo after the late, great Don van Vliet - better known by his aant-garde rock persona, Captain Beefheart. Duo van Vliet is dedicated to the expansion of the viola and accordion repertoire and this debut album aims to further this goal. The album features an amazing array of works from arrangements of John Dowland songs and Benjamin Britten's Lachrymae, to four contemporary works for solo viola, solo accordion and for the duo.

The combination of viola and accordion works so well you're amazed it's not been deployed before. Toshio Hosokawa’s Into the Depths of Time is the best of the bunch, a haunting, slow-moving meditation in which “the viola is the human voice, the accordion a sympathetic response… a fertile womb embracing it.” An ear-stretching anthology, wonderfully played.
