About
The songs were composed spontaneously, most of them was created during Chopin’s youth spent in Warsaw. In a newspaper, he encountered the poem Remembrance by Adam Mickiewicz and in a spur of emotions the 17-year-old composer, or slightly older, it is not certain, sketched a song. Together with his friends, he was an avid café-goer, including the one owned by Honorata Zimermanowa, which works until today under the former name “Honoratka” in the Miodowa Street. He would then sit down at the piano, maybe to sing in a group. The poet Stefan Witwicki also belonged to the regulars of such encounters. Chopin composed up to eight songs based on his modest poems. Some of them quickly gained popularity, they circulated in copies with an added accompaniment, or even with changed lyrics; The Maiden’s Wish, Drinking Song, and Before the Battle appeared under so called wild publications in Kiev and Poznań.
