About

Calmus has assembled collages out of the diverse Luther hymns. These chorale motets lead from the Middle Ages via the Renaissance and the Romantic period into the Modern Age and illuminate the hymns from the most diverse viewpoints. Completely new combinations of the various epochs and styles come into being. They affect one another, they complement one another, they contrast with one another. From the individual motets, cantata movements, parody masses, organ music, hymns and Gregorian chorales, building blocks have emerged out of which whole new sound constructions have been assembled. A unique and varied program and a great homage to the reformer Martin Luther!

    Recordings of the Year 2017

New York Times 13th December 2017

This excellent German vocal quintet presents seven of Martin Luther’s chorales in many versions, typically changing composers from one verse to the next... instrumental chorale preludes appear in Swingle Singers-like vocalise, without the insistent perkiness.
