Reflecting the breadth of genius in Canadian music, the works on this release are exclusively from Canadian composers. The first portion of the release is titled “Classics with a Twist,” and features composers John Rea, Peter Paul Koprowski, and Steven Gellman in works inspired by the romantic composers Schumann, Brahms and Chopin. The second half of the project, “Worlds Apart,” offers a more “edgy” look at music, and features composers David Jaeger, Michel-Georges Bregent, Patrick Cardy, Micheline Coulombe Saint-Marcoux and Diana McIntosh. All of the works were inspired in unique ways by literature and art from the past to create something fresh and modern, sometimes even violent and comflicted. An incredible variety of styles is presented here, ranging from the virtuosic romantic to the radical improviser performing from graphic notation. David Jaeger’s composition, for instance, features a trio for piano, computer and electronics, inspired by Dante’s inferno.
