About
The RIAS Kammerchor is joined by Capella de la Torre, which just won the ECHO Klassik award as “Ensemble of the Year”, as they trace the Reformation in music. One of the fascinating revelations of this thoughtful programme of Orlando di Lasso, Heinrich Schütz, Claudio Monteverdi, Michael Praetorius and other outstanding composers is the close relationship that exists even between Protestant and Catholic works.
This highly varied CD juxtaposes the splendour of early Baroque polychoral music with intimate, modestly scored works, all recorded with superb fidelity in Berlin’s Jesus-Christus-Kirche.

Polychoral polyphony is all very well but it’s the simplest material that is the true measure of this recording. Martin Luther and Johann Walter’s Verlieh uns Frieden gnädiglich is a unison chant, delivered here with such unaffected simplicity and instinctive flow – the heart of a programme that celebrates a lived musical culture as much as a historical anniversary
