Fromental Halévy’s grand opera La Juive is an early Romantic work that has been revived increasingly in our time. Mahler called it “one of the greatest operas ever”. The leading role was championed by Caruso, but Halevy’s masterpiece had to wait until 1974 for its first studio recording – not complete, but containing most of the important scenes. The tenor was Richard Tucker, heard singing heroically in the last recording before his untimely death.
