About

Four wonderful singers present a mixture of rarities and masterpieces in this the ninth volume of Oxford Lieder’s complete edition of the songs of Hugo Wolf. World-renowned bass Robert Holl is joined by rising stars Lydia Teuscher, Thomas Hobbs and Williams Berger, with the Artistic Director of Oxford Lieder, Sholto Kynoch, at the piano. Recorded live at the Festival, this disc is a wonderful record of Wolf’s Michelangelo Lieder together with some of his earliest songs. Although rarely heard, these youthful Lieder are wonderful compositions and are fascinated to hear alongside the later epic settings. They are presented here with full translations and notes by Lieder expert Richard Stokes.

Awards and reviews

June 2017

The real treat is Lydia Teuscher’s gorgeously sweet and agile soprano voice, matched by Thomas Hobbs’s silken tenor. Teuscher’s rendition of the summertime lullaby, Wiegenlied im Sommer, borne aloft on Sholto Kynoch’s delicate, shimmering accompaniment, is spellbinding. The bass Robert Holl also brings Wagnerian gravitas to the Michelangelo-Lieder

22nd January 2017

the late, austere Michelangelo-Gedichte [are] sung with grave, rugged grandeur by the veteran Robert Holl. But the highlights are the contributions of the bright German soprano Lydia Teuscher in the earlier Sechs Lieder.
