One of the most renowned classical music conductors of the twentieth century, Herbert von Karajan (1908-1989), born in Austria, was in charge of the Berlin Philharmonic for 35 years. A dominant figure in European classical music from the mid-1950s until his death, Karajan recorded prolifically and was the top-selling classical music recording artist of all time, having sold an estimated 200 million records. This release presents Karajan’s 1959 LP 1812 (Columbia – 33CX 1517), which presents a selection of well known Romantic pieces by various composers: Tchaikovsky, Lizst, Berlioz, Sibelius, and Von Weber. Further compositions by the three latter musicians recorded by Karajan during the same period have been added here as a bonus.
