Continuing in their ongoing series with Resonus Classics, the Saint Thomas Choir of Men & Boys, Fifth Avenue, New York and conductor John Scott release a compelling and powerful recording of choral works by French composer Gabriel Fauré, including his iconic Op. 48 Requiem.
Featuring the version accompanied by chamber orchestra and organ, the choir and Scott are joined for Fauré’s best-known work by the excellent New York-based Orchestra of St Luke’s.
Also featured on this recording are a selection of shorter works including the celebrated Cantique de Jean Racine and the striking Messe Basse for upper voices.

A forthright, devotional interpretation that avoids heavyweight solemnity without losing sight of the work’s ritual elements…this is a fine choir, the treble tone appealingly bright, altos and tenors unearthly yet beautiful in the Offertoire, and the tenors on their own super-refined at the start of the Sanctus. David Pittsinger is the admirably consolatory baritone, and his son Richard the secure treble soloists in the Pie Jesu

The choir sings extremely well…All in all this is a fine performance of Fauré’s cherishable masterpiece and I enjoyed it very much… The singing on this disc is distinguished and I hope that anyone who acquires it will enjoy it as much as I did. In addition to the quality of the music making the release is graced by an excellent set of notes by Dr Martin Ennis…This is a most desirable release.
