About

Globe Music is a new record label from Shakespeare’s Globe that sets out to capture the intimacy of our candlelit concerts in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. A 17th century-style jewel box theatre, one of the great revelations of the space when it opened in 2014 was

the crystalline acoustic that has quickly established it a world class chamber music venue.

Our ambition for Globe Music is to bring together some of the world’s finest musicians in special, unexpected collaborations, to bottle a unique environment where music and the theatrical meet.

Our first release, Songs From Our Ancestors, features two of today’s most imaginative artists; tenor Ian Bostridge and guitarist Xuefei Yang. Their eclectic journey traces a poetic path through history and place that is both global and personal; from Shakespeare’s contemporary John Dowland, through Schubert, Britten and Chinese folk music, to contemporary composers Domenick Argento, Stephen Goss and Chen Yi.

Awards and reviews

Christmas 2016

Bostridge’s clear tone and exemplary diction maintains a warm, intimate quality (he often seems to be button-holing us personally) and he could not ask for a more responsive partner: Xuefei Yang’s playing is sensitive, agile and graceful, both when functioning as accompanist and on the instrumental solos.

Irresistible … much outstanding music-making and some rare and fascinating pieces.

Classical Ear 18th November 2016

It’s Yang’s characterful guitar that steals the limelight throughout, notably so in the rarefied subtleties of Stephen Goss’s settings of ancient Chinese poetry…[Bostridge is] secure in the Schubert and altogether communicative in the Goss
