About
First release of the live concert from the 2003 Verbier Festival.
Four star singers: Andrea Rost, Magdalena Kožená, Matthew Polenzani, Thomas Quasthoff and two great pianists: Yefim Bronfman, James Levine.
Performed in the spirit of true chamber music, with characterful voices and a feeling of mutual sympathy, the singers and their accompanists display a wide range of mood, colour, accentuation, blend and individuality.
A linked programme of Brahms lieder, sung by each of the soloists in turn, and Brahms’s ever-popular Liebeslieder Waltzes opp. 52 and 65.
Generous 80+ minutes of great music-making.

The quartet themselves make an appealingly lively sound…Quasthoff and especially Kozena are strongest in their solo selections, the mezzo’s three songs distinguished by her plangent tone and slightly shimmering vibrato. Polenzani sings with pleasingly ardent tone

There’s such a pervasive sense of holiday spirit here that you can virtually taste the crisp Swiss mountain air...the four starry singers are perfectly cast, sparking off one another like a top-notch string quartet and achieving that rare feat of blending seamlessly when required but also contrasting quite beautifully throughout. And most appealingly of all, everyone just sounds like they’re having enormous fun.
