About

Following our successful release of Giacomo Meyerbeer’s opera Vasco da Gama , a production awarded the Echo Prize for the Best Editorial Achievement of 2015, cpo are now present another opera by the same composer. Here Meyerbeer, late in his life, succeeds in producing playful, poetic, and humorously ironic evocations of the world of romantic spirits and fairies. Meyerbeer’s setting of the story focusing on the lovers Dinorah and Hoël, separated under mysterious circumstances during a pilgrimage and then happily reunited, mixes lyrical, folkloric, and comical elements lending the music a subtle colour palette all of its own.

Awards and reviews

November 2016

Ciofi gets around all the notes – no mean feat given that Dinorah’s madess is expressed in lashings of coloratura. Etienne Dupuis shines as her bullish boyfriend Hoël…Philippe Talbot relishes the comic role of the foolish Corentin…Mazzola conducts Deutsche Oper forces with a combination of flair and precision

August 2016

Meyerbeer’s score is most enjoyable. Enrique Mazzola spins gossamer touches from the Deutsche Oper’s orchestra. Patrizia Ciofi is plucky in the title role…there is plenty of virile bite to French Canadian baritone Etienne Dupuis’s singing as Hoël…Dupuis strikes a good partnership with Philippe Talbot in the comic tenor role of Corentin…[an] enjoyable recording

16th December 2016

A pleasant surprise that should please everyone with a Francophone inclination.

October 2016

Under Enrique Mazzola’s forceful guidance, the Deutsche Oper’s woodwinds shine in the faux-folkloric music that does duty for Breton couleur locale, while the violins play Dinorah’s Mendelssohnian leitmotif with fleetfooted virtuosity. The title role is notorious for the demands it makes on a soprano’s coloratura technique, and Patrizia Ciofi is spectacular in it. She not only dispatches the roulades of the celebrated Shadow Song with ease and a wealth of nuance, but her voice has an additional depth for the more intimate moments of the role, such as the Berceuse and the Légende.

Opera Now September 2016

Patrizia Ciofi does the honours here, and very well too, her bell-like voice tinkling prettily through the music
