About

Per Nørgård’smusic originates in an inextinguishable desire to explore the marvels of the world and the powers of music. His eight symphonies stand as milestones, composed through six decades, each with its own unique musical world. This recording by the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestraand conductor John Storgårdspresents two of Nørgård’smost dramatic works; the chaotic and troubled Symphony No. 4inspired by the schizophrenic Swiss artist Adolf Wölfli, and the fearless Symphony No. 5, in which the composer seems to embrace violent forces of nature.

September 2016

At times, listening to these quixotically vibrant, multi-layered scores, Jackson Pollock at his craziest has come to mind: you sense the energy in the teeming textures, but trying to find reassuring form can induce vertigo…Storgards has drawn out the Ariadne’s thread I always sensed had to be there and pulled it just tight enough

July 2016

The detail in the writing – articulation bestowed upon single instruments in the tiniest of gestures – is beguiling. So are these performances. Listening across the orchestra is vital in this music, just as in Sibelius. The Oslo Philharmonic sound settled at the foundations while suggesting spontaneity on the surface…the brass and percussion offer extreme restraint and delicacy

John Storgårds makes a strong case for these symphonies; the recording is among Dacapo’s best
