During Schubert’s time the guitar was a popular instrument for accompanying the human voice, and Schubert himself also wrote compositions for the guitar as an accompaniment to songs and as part of chamber music ensembles. Austrian baritone Matthias Helm and the guitar duo Hasard with Stephan Buchegger and Guntram Zauner now shed a new light on one of the most popular and moving song cycles of music history, “Die schöne Müllerin” by Franz Schubert. The version for guitar duo presented here requires no changes to the sound material and captivates with its fragility and delicacy. The complexity and the diverse colors of this instrument approach the unique sound of the fortepiano during the time of Schubert and invite the listener to observe something familiar from a wholly different perspective.
