About

For this release, the Munich Radio Orchestra turn to the masterpieces of Ottorino Respighi. His Antiche danze ed arie, free arrangements of arias and dances from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, enables listeners to rediscover forgotten rhythms and tones. These works are complemented by his Gli Uccelli (The Birds) suite. In 1927 he drew on various harpsichord and lute miniatures for this “Suite for Small Orchestra,” producing picturesque snapshots here showing him from his admirable and remarkable side as a sensitive observer who discovers the pictorial element in all that he sees.

Awards and reviews

May 2016

Under violinist-conductor Henry Raudales, the Munich Radio Orchestra approach Respighi’s Baroque reworkings with fastidious care and exquisite attention to detail…his approach to Gli uccelli, meanwhile, is altogether more extrovert, and his breezy, almost casual way with the ‘Preludio’ comes as something of a surprise…like the rest of the disc [the Pines of Rome] is played with exceptionally beauty, and the recording itself is first-rate.
