About
Wagner’s tale of the struggle between spiritual and profane love, and of redemption through love, is given a radical visual update in Sebastian Baumgarten’s controversial yet thought-provoking Bayreuth production. Joep van Lieshout’s giant installation ‘The Technocrat’ dominates the stage, its industrial interior giving credence to the idea that Tannhäuser is one big experiment and playing host to some magnificent performances, among them Torsten Kerl’s robust interpretation of the title role and Camilla Nylund’s wonderfully empathetic Elisabeth.

Tannhäuser, not the easiest opera in the repertoire to cast, is handsomely sung here...Torsten Kerl puts his Rienzi experience to good use as the frustrated minstrel...His women are powerful...and (for once) powerfully contrasted. Camilla Nylund's Elisabeth has a range of novel emotions to convey, including humour and sexual interest...Question marks begin with the staging.

Camilla Nylund’s Elisabeth is a marvel of unstrained luxuriance, strength and limpidity, and she looks beautiful. Torsten Kerl is an admirable Tannhäuser, though I like him better in the less strenuous passages; when expending great effort he can sound vocally pinched. Michelle Breedt, in fine voice despite a tendency to be timbrally one-dimensional, is a sparkling, mischievous (and pregnant) Venus. Kwangchul Youn is magnificent as the Landgraf, delivering a moving, gravely dignified performance.
