Whoever is prepared to record the Symphonies of Johannes Brahms has to have discovered something new in this music. The conductor Howard Griffiths went searching for clues: notations by the conductor and Brahms enthusiast Fritz Steinbach (1855–1916) enabled him to understand and perform the music in a manner consistent with what the composer intended. Griffiths, with the Staatsorchester Frankfurt as his travelling companions, embarks on a thrilling journey and plays the Symphonies as authentically as possible.
