For May, cpo is releasing the first recording of the original version of Weber’s heroic opera Silvana. The present recording relies on the materials that form the critical scholarly edition of the work; a unique edition in that it presents the raw version of the score, but includes the improvements made by Weber for the work’s premiere in Frankfurt in 1810, that can also be heard on this release, performed by the Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Muenchner Rundfunkorchester under the baton of Ulf Schirmer.

Vocally, Rudolf already has something of the Freischütz Max in his melodies, and Ferdinand von Bothmer sings them gracefully, especially when set against Michaela Kaune’s Mechtilde, who is strong even when gripped in the coils of serpentine coloratura. Ulf Schirmer directs a cheerful, colourful performance, and has the benefit of the detailed edition prepared by Markus Bandur for the new Weber Gesamtausgabe
