The Ondine recording team have caught the spirit of these performances well, with the piano a strong presence yet without swamping the more fragile solo strings.

Much in evidence is that telepathy that passes between musicians comfortable in each other's company…the Tetzlaffs and Vogt bring a Teutonic terseness to it, screwing up the tension that is so much part of Brahms's music and making each span into a wonderfully cathartic experience.

The string players here – brother and sister Christian and Tanja Tetzlaff – are regular quartet partners. Together with sensitive pianism from Lars Vogt, ensemble is alert, accurate, never forced: already a favourite CD.

These three musicians, who perform together often as the Tetzlaff Trio, bring polish and passion to three classic works. The start of the Adagio of Trio No. 1 is especially memorable, its hushed, fragile strings alternating with a piano line played by Mr. Vogt with both softness and grandeur.
