About
Vivaldi’s Magnificat and Gloria were both composed for the Ospedale della Pietà, a Venetian orphanage for young women, who, in the words of the French scholar Charles de Brosses, could “sing like angels and play the violin, the flute, the organ, the oboe, the cello, the bassoon.” In this recording Riccardo Muti builds superb Baroque edifices with the forces of the New Philharmonia and two glorious mezzo-sopranos, Tereza Berganza and Lucia Valentini Terrani.
