About

The highly regarded Italian keyboard soloist Riccardo Cecchitti performs music by C.P.E. Bach on the fortepiano. The works on the disc are the four Sonatas (Wq 55:5, 57:6, 57:4, and 59:1); two Fantasias (Wq 59:5 and 59:6); and the Rondo in G major, Wq 57:3.

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach is now recognised as a one of the most significant composers of the time that covered the transition between the baroque and classical periods. As opposed to his brothers, he always cultivated the musical traditions associated with his father Johann Sebastian whilst adopting a more dramatic style of writing which would later reach fulfilment with the music of Haydn and Mozart.

Italian keyboard soloist Ricardo Cecchiti is the founding member of various chamber music groups including the internationally renowned Voces Intimae piano trio. He plays both period and modern pianos and fortepianos. His repertoire, whilst including contemporary pieces, is mostly concentrated on chamber, solo classical and early romantic music.

Awards and reviews

June 2015

Cecchetti understands Bach's intensely personal rhetoric in the two fantasias, where the music so often resembles heightened speech. Here and in slow movements, he makes telling use of the fortepiano's veiled sordino.

8th March 2015

Cecchetti plays them all with fire and a fine sense of direction, using a rather gentle German fortepiano of around 1785, which has almost all the flexibility and expressiveness of a clavichord, but with added projection and bite, so that the fierce accents really tell.
