Nicolas Achten, who is also the director of Scherzi Musicali, does so affectingly. While billed as a baritone, he sometimes sounds like a light tenor, but he is alert to the expressive use of dissonance. The soprano Deborah York also sings expressively and with more vocal substance but practically no vibrato. Lambert Colson’s smooth playing of the cornetto enhances several melodically oriented pieces, and the other instrumentalists are consistently excellent.
