Testament offers this important recording of Adriana Lecouvreur as a tribute to the soprano Magda Olivero who died in Milan on 8 September 2014 aged 104.
The composer Francesco Cilea considered Olivero to be the definitive interpreter of his opera Adriana Lecouvreur.
In 1951, after ten years of retirement, Olivero returned to the stage at the request of Cilea to revive Adriana Lecouvreur and thereafter she remained active in opera and concerts almost to the end of her life.
This recording of a live performance of Adriana Lecouvreur at the Edinburgh Festival on 27 August 1963 by the San Carlo Opera Company, conducted by Oliviero de Fabritiis, comes from a BBC broadcast. It stars Magda Olivero at the peak of her powers with a top class supporting cast.

Through vocal means alone Olivero presents a completely realized characterization—the great tragédienne as loves and suffers with consuming passion. She convinces totally when declaring herself ‘l’umile ancella del genio creator’, her charm with both Michonnet and Maurizio is irresistible, and she offers all the necessary fire when confronting the Princess.
