the French conductor is a practical, uneccentric Wagnerian who knows how to build and pace an effective performance. What stand out especially here are balances between stage and pit and chorus and the soloists which allow an exceptional amount of detail through...As per normal at this address, casting is intelligent and original.

The first noteworthy thing about this set is the live-ness of the acoustic...
The soloists are all very good, too. Michael König is a four-square, dependable Lohengrin, who is fully inside the role, both in the clarity of his tone and the cleanliness of his vocal colour...Schuster is calmly imperious as Ortrud.
