Awards and reviews
January 2015
the sound of this ensemble is something to marvel at, especially when it has been so beautifully recorded by Harmonia Mundi…these performances are notable for the superlative polish of the playing, and a sense that the music-making can be urgent and exciting without ever feeling rushed.

These are beautifully articulated performances, imbued with elegance and charm. Tempi, dynamics and phrasing all seem just right…The whole five movements are logically sequenced and integrated into a polished performance of ineffable beauty…rugged, intense and impassioned…what better way to bow out after a 44 year career; it doesn’t get much better than this.
Audiophile Audition 29th September 2014
You can’t go wrong with anything in this entire set...It is magnificent, vast yet intimate, missing any extraneous noise, with nary a grunt or even a breath from the musicians. How does the Tokyo String Quartet handle these works? With utmost aplomb, guided by an uncanny degree of inspirational talent.
