About

This world premiere recording presents the Danish composer John Frandsen's eloquent and moving Requiem (2010) for soloists, choir and orchestra. The work unfolds as a full-scale ‘operatic’ setting of the entire medieval Latin text in fascinating alternation with intimate solo hymns to Danish poems by Simon Grotrian (b. 1961), sung by the young Faroese singer Teitur. The composer has dedicated his requiem to the victims of the tragedy on the Norwegian island of Utøya in 2011.

Awards and reviews

January 2015

The score similarly weaves a deft path between the modernist and antique, with echoes of Tippett and Stravinsky matched by passages of medieval restraint. The performance is exceptional, with the Danish National Concert and Girls' Choirs giving a fine account throughout. This disc evokes the complexity of human mortality with neither bitterness nor recourse to the saccharine.

November 2014

Frandsen has marshalled his large choral and orchestral forces with a resolute mastery...A cosmopolitan range of stylistic echoes and influences can be discerned...The choruses are on spectacular form throughout...This eloquent statement deserves the widest circulation.

This is an impressive work, given a highly effective performance and a stunning recording. Its message will have a wide appeal but I have the feeling the music itself, being tricky to shelve in any straightforward category, may have problems taking on a life of its own.
