Lutosławski’s output is an exceptionally good example of how vastly divergent the judgements of critics and the wider audience can be. Little Suite, the last piece on this CD, was considered by the composer as a product of marginal importance and yet it belongs to his most often performed works. Jeux Vénitiens is an entirely different case. Highly acclaimed by the critics and deeply analysed by musicologists, it is rarely included in concert programmes. This stunning release on the DUX label gives the listener the opportunity to hear both pieces and much more besides.
