About
The cornerstone of this album is one of Felix Mendelssohn’s best known works, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and the album includes the five instrumental pieces from the incidental music, with the world famous Wedding March closing the suite.
The two Piano Concertos are played by Saleem Ashkar, who has performed the Concerto No.1 a number of times with Riccardo Chailly and the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig and on tour.
The album includes the world premiere recording of Ruy Blas (in the version taken from Hogwood’s critical edition).

With playing of this order, a barnacled piece such as Mendelssohn’s Wedding March springs into new life...There’s just something about the sound they make — the unity of the ensemble, the lively colours, the fine blend — that positively demands a tactile response.
