About
Written in French in 1828 for the Paris Opéra, Le Comte Ory has maintained its success to this day. Re-using some of the music of his Viaggio a Reims, Rossini turns the disguise-based libretto into a spirited play of erotic lightness. Lluís Pasqual’s witty and clever production was recorded at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro. The dynamic, international young cast is headed by tenor Yijie Shi in the title role, Laura Polverelli as his astute page and María José Moreno as Countess Adèle. Paolo Carignani conducts with verve and brio.

The musical performance is at once satisfactory and maddening. Satisfactory in that all of the cast are able to negotiate with only occasional smudges Rossini’s very demanding writing; much less satisfactory in that the conductor’s very brusque approach wholly lacks elegance.
Opera Now
Carignani conducts with panache and the orchestra and chorus are good (especially the sopranos). Yijie Shi’s Ory sails through the multitudinous notes with aplomb...Moreno’s soprano makes the extraordinary demands of the role sound almost easy – she breezes through the most densely-written fioratura with thrilling ease.
