Zemlinsky: Der Kreidekreis
Renate Behle, Roland Hermann, Reiner Goldberg, Siegfried Lorenz & Celina Lindsley
Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Stefan Soltesz
Zemlinsky's penultimate opera is surprisingly austere. Strong performances, but the lack of text and translations is disappointing as there's much spoken dialogue.

About
Der Kreidekreis was composed in 1931/32, and was the then 61-year old Zemlinsky’s seventh and last completed opera.
The story is a blend of fairy-tale Utopia, social criticism and inwardness, all of which make themselves felt in Zemlinsky’s music which seeks to combine varied stylistic components.

Opera Now
it’s a fascinating score, superbly orchestrated with more than a nod to the dance and jazz idioms of the day and some exotic Chinese scoring, but despite Stefan Soltész’s rhythmic conducting and the spiciness that the Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin brings to the recording it doesn’t hold interest.
