Buchbinder's [Schubert] has a rare depth and richness of implication...The touch is delicate, and the timbre beautiful, as the variations unfold...What Buchbinder is after, with his many kinds of cantabile, is the drama of Schubert's Lieder.

[the C minor Impromptu's] artless simplicity is undermined by the mannerism of interpretation...The B flat major Sonata fares better. There is an apt blend of grandeur and sensitivity, with a clarity of definition to Buchbinder's structural scheme...and with touches of tonal colouring and contemplative pausing less obtrusive than in the Impromptus.

Buchbinder keeps things moving without dragging or rushing, he varies the tempo subtly for each section and theme and his touches are detailed without fussiness. Fermatas are not just observed but they manage to hold us in anticipation...The recorded sound is warm and natural at every level.
