About

Magdalen’s latest release celebrates the music of Jean Sibelius (1865-1957).

Some of Sibelius’ best loved works are featured: Symphonies 2 and 5, Violin Concerto, Karelia Suite and Tapiola all conducted by Tauno Hannikainen (1896-1968). Other pieces (Swan of Tuonela, Romance and Lemminkäinen’s Return) are conducted by Anthony Collins and Sixten Ehrling. Renowned virtuoso Tossy Spivakovsky is the soloist in the Violin Concerto.

Hannikainen was one of Sibelius’ favourite interpreters and he was given the honour of conducting the music at Sibelius’ funeral. These exceptionally vivid stereo recordings first appeared on the Everest and World Record Club labels.

Anthony Collins was another highly respected interpreter of Sibelius and these EMI recordings, unjustly neglected over the years, are simply superb. Ehrling’s acclaimed Swedish recording of Lemminkäinen’s Return originally appeared on Capitol as a filler for another version of the Violin Concerto.

With a total running time of almost 153 minutes this represents excellent value for money.
