About
Originally released in 1950, and now making its debut appearance on CD, this was the earliest LP version of Verdi’s vendetta-driven drama and showcases the nobly sympathetic jester of the old Met’s leading baritone, Leonard Warren, just a decade before his untimely death, on stage at the Met, at the age of only 48. He is partnered here by the German soprano Erna Berger as a girlish-toned Gilda and leading Met tenor Jan Peerce as the philandering Duke.
