About

Until her untimely death in 2003, Susan Chilcott was placed among the outstanding lyric sopranos of her generation, one whose captivating stage presence, dramatic vitality and vocal poetry created memorable portrayals of heroines in Verdi, Janácek and Britten, among others. Her last recording was of songs by Copland, acclaimed at the time of its first release for her 'commanding authority' and 'youthful vitality' (Gramophone). This recital is now complemented by a range of Shakespeare-inspired songs from Berlioz to Dominick Argento, never previously released.

Awards and reviews

December 2013

her strong, supple voice [is] packed with beauty, character and potential...Scratch away the loss and grief - a difficult job - and what you hear is a performance of fierce intelligence and wit, a voice that takes flight gloriously...It is also a recital in which Burnside, often reserved in his expression, shines

November 2013

her performances of Copland at his folksiest feel perfectly idiomatic, and without the starchiness one still hears from some American singers. As much as she enjoys the text, she uses her full operatic voice without any gimmicky tone manipulation...Even those who are only now catching up with Chilcott's art will know what the fuss was about.

20th October 2013

Even after chemotherapy, her voice sounds youthful and radiant, and her artistry in Strauss’s and Berlioz’s melancholic Ophelia Songs, in the joie de vivre of Britten’s Auden setting, Calypso, and in the sublime simplicity of Vaughan Williams’s Orpheus with His Lute, is at its peak.

19th September 2013

both recordings capture the blaze in her tone and the fire in her soul that made her so special. Copland's 12 Poems of Emily Dickinson and Ophelia songs by Strauss and Berlioz are reminders of the unflinching way in which she could confront the darker recesses of the human psyche.
