[Koch] anticipates his recent summer festival triumphs in big Wagner and Strauss with a rich-toned, always text-conscious and intelligent reading of the title-role, John Daszak has both the power and the wackiness for Mephistopheles...and Catherine Naglestad is a seductive Duchess of Parma.

Netopil’s conducting goes hell-for-leather at the score...The choral writing is extraordinary in its series of effects and the Staatsoper Chorus is on superb form – perhaps the jewel of this set. Wolfgang Koch is an excellent Doktor Faust, his baritone true and rich, and he lasts the course unscathed.
