Bicinia Hungarica (1937-1942) is an encyclopedic work, and is a microcosm of Kodály’s musical aims distilled into the framework of two part compositions. Written with a children’s choir in mind, the work is based on a 16th century collection, published by Georges Rhauus in 1545, entitled Bicinia Gallica. Kodály’s intention was, not only in this work but in general, to blend Eastern tradition, which survived in folk music, with the values of Western art music.
