About

No one would seriously doubt the canonical ranking of the string quartets of Joseph Haydn; nonetheless, as with his symphonies, only a far too small selection of this group of works has been able to secure a place in the repertoire of the ensembles and in the catalogues of recording companies. The present three-volume anthology containing string quartets of Haydn aims to document the significance of Haydn's string-quartet production precisely with lesser-known works. This project is being realised by the Schuppanzigh Quartet, one of the most renowned quartets performing on historical instruments. This CD is the third and final part of this Haydn anthology which has been enthusiastically received by the press (including the Diapason d’or for Vol. 1).

Early Music Review December 2013

Haydn always makes me smile so it’s been a cheerful time with him as Composer of the Week on Radio 3…The group’s previous Haydn recordings have won awards and it will not surprise me to hear that this one has done the same.

November 2013

these performances are in no way academic or 'under-interpreted', and nor can they be described as anything less than profoundly refreshing.
