About

'Lodoïska' was first performed at the Théâtre Feydeau in Paris on 18 July 1791. The opera was received enthusiastically and ran for 200 performances. It was so popular that it was revived again at the Feydeau in 1819 and was performed frequently in the Germanic countries in the early 19th century, including a production in Vienna in 1805, while Cherubini was there.

This recording on original instruments, under Jeremie Rhorer, points to the debt, musically and politically, Beethoven owed to Cherubini in his later 'rescue' opera 'Fidelio'. Rhorer is conducting 'Le Nozze di Figaro' at Glyndebourne thus summer.

reliable if not striking singers, though they are not compelling in the numerous spoken passages; and it is played on period instruments, with a refreshing rawness.

September 2013

Cherubini's score is full of good things...The cast, made up almost entirely of native French speakers, is pretty good...Sebastien Gueze has the right kind of lightness, just managing to avoid crooning...Nathalie Manfrino is splendidly passionate in Lodaiska's second air

September 2013

The opera begins well with a spirited Overture and is full of colour from Cherubini’s instrumentation and liveliness from Jeremie Rhoere’s chorus and Orchestra, constitutes which play an important throughout the 110 minutes of these concert performances...One is left to wonder why such a colourful opera has been left to languish.

August 2013

The music is always interesting and imaginative… makes considerable impact and anyone with an interest in opera of this period should hear this set. The presentation is worthy of the project with admirable essays on Cherubini and this opera as well as the full text and translation

July 2013

Well worth hearing, and Jeremie Rhorer’s decisive conducting of his period-instrument forces draws out the impact of Cherubini’s numerous striking harmonic and orchestral gestures

9th May 2013

The great performances come from Philippe Do, gallant as Titzikan, and Armando Noguera, handsome-sounding and wonderfully witty as Varbel.
