World-famous Italian conductor, Arturo Toscanini (1867-1957), conducts here the NBC Symphony Orchestra, of which he was the first music director from 1937-1954. Showcased are historic recordings of works by Richard Wagner (1813-1883), dating from the late 1940s/early 1950s and recorded in the main in Carnegie Hall, New York. Featured soloists are American soprano Helen Traubel and leading Wagner tenor of the time, Danish/American singer, Lauritz Melchior.

The majority of the tracks are purely orchestral – some of them, like the wonderfully intense, incredibly slow account of the prelude to the first act of Parsifal, and the stark, savage account of Siegfried's funeral march from Götterdämmerung, are very striking indeed...The digital transfers are wiry but adequate, though some pre-echo and moments of unsteadiness remain.
