About
One of the outstanding composers of his day, Johann Adolph Hasse was seen as possessing “the same qualities of true genius, taste and judgment” as his librettist Pietro Metastasio. Didone abbandonata represents the once hugely popular 18th century genre of opera seria, exploring the same tragic story as Purcell’s earlier Dido and Aeneas while expanding the heroine’s conflicts between regal duties, love, and helplessness in the face of desertion.

The orchestral playing of the Hofkapelle München is lively and colourful, allowing the range of Hasse’s orchestration to make its mark.The vocal parts are dominated by high voices... It says much for the performances of the major roles that distinctive personalities are conveyed, and both Theresa Holzhauser as Dido and the counter-tenor Flavio Ferri-Benedetto as Aeneas emerge with great credit

Iarbas gets the best aria in the entire opera...and Barna-Sabadus delivers it with ravishing control and finely honed technique; it's a real gem that marks the Romanian out as a name to watch...at Naxos's bargain price this is a rarity that's well worth investigating.
