As a document of the characteristics of Erard and Steinway pianos and their relevance to Ravel's piano works, this set has much to recommend it...As for Giacometti's interpretations, the harder the pieces, the better he is. Gaspard de la nuit is terrific throughout...But once Giacometti has, as it were, time to think, matters deteriorate.

Gaspard on an Erard is interesting but simply sounds and works better on a Steinway...The Sonatine, on the other hand, sounds very convincing on the older instrument, as do some of the movements from Le Tombeau

parallel discs of four Ravel works for piano played on a wooden-frame Erard “period” instrument, with its expressively clear and clattery sound, and a steel-frame Steinway, with its streamlined, decisive eloquence...In general, I incline to the Steinway effect.
