Jan van Gilse: Symphony No. 4
Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, David Porcellijn
On this evidence Van Gilse has a penchant for glowing radiance; drama comes to him more fitfully. This may be his weakness but for the listener in the right mood that is also his shining strength.

About
The third instalment of cpo’s van Gilse Symphony series includes the popular fourth symphony. Van Gilse helped to fund the printing of hundreds of scores so it was for this reason his powerful and individual fourth symphony was not forgotten.
In contrast his Concert Overture has almost completely disappeared from the stage and the Funeral Music on the Death of Uilenspiegel had to wait until the end of World War II before it received its premiere.
